Chicago
Topic: July, 2008

I have returned from Chicago where I visited family and went to the ASG  Conference (more on that in a later post).  I had a wonderful time!   It was so nice to visit with family that I haven't seen for at least 12 years and up where they live, in No. Illinois was beautiful!  The flowers that I struggle to grow in my backyard are wild and plentiful in their huge yard!  The fireflies at night are magical, but the mosquitos were hungry.

I took the train downtown a few times and wandered around. Took a water taxi to Navy Pier and had a hot dog.   The skyline is so diverse and enormous compared to our downtown Los Angeles.   I can't wait to go back and explore some more.

My family there was so warm and gracious and made me feel right at home.  I will definitely be going back for future visits.

I visited Vogue Fabrics in Evanston and bought some nice linens, bamboo knits, and a slicker fabric for a rain jacket.

Oh, and did I mention I ate way too much, but enjoyed every bite!

Fanny Mae, Morke's, White Castle burgers, hot dogs, pizza, dumplings and sourkraut!  Ah, it was calorie overload heaven.

I finished the skirt, jacket, dresses, and tee.  I realized I need to take photos and post before I pack my camera.

I'm getting ready to leave to Chicago for 11 days!  I fly out early saturday - 5 days with family, and 6 days at the ASG National Conference.  I'll have lots of photos and stories when I return. I'm hoping to meet up with sewing friends and friends who moved to the Chicago area, visit the museums, the house I lived in, see fire flies, and eat all the good Chicago foods, and of course, see my cousins and aunt/God mother!

On Your Mark, Get Set.....
Topic: June, 2008

I got my weekend sewing all cut out and ready to GO.  Last night I had a cutting marathon.   A skirt, jacket, tee shirt, and dress.  And I still got a dress and jacket cut out from my last cutting frenzy.  I plan on sewing all weekend.

This is what is in the pile

http://www.silhouettepatterns.com/2850.htm

it's the skirt on the envelope I will make from a nice off white linen.  This is 1 pattern piece cut 18x with the edges/seams on the right side serged and visible.  I got a nice poly rayon thread for the serging.

from the same off white linen.  The hems are rolled with the same rayon poly thread and it is unlined.  The collar is 1 piece, 1 layer. I need to find 2 interesting buttons for the closure.  I will make a cropped version.  Not sure if I will wear it with the skirt, but we'll see.

these pattern photos do not do the garments justice.  I saw both of these made up at the recent Peggy Sagers event and both are really really cute.

The dress is  Simplicuty 3775.  I've made this before and like the way it gives a waist.  I've  lost 10 pounds, and want to show it off!

The fabric is a knit rayon with a Paris theme which I purchased from Christine Jonson's website.

The tee shirt is for DH.  I got some powerdry wicking fabric and will make him a tee with a Jalie pattern.  I want to see if I can make him a teeshirt that is cooler and nicer under his mandatory lead vest in the California sun.  Whenever the weather gets hot and I start whining about the heat, I think, at least I'm not wearing a wool uniform and lead vest !

finally, I'm a reality show fanatic, and lately been watching The Bachelorette..   I found this fun blog  that recaps... if your a Bachelorette fan, check it out

Busy Weekend

This Weekend was a double Hollywood Bowl weekend.

Friday nite was Opening nite with Liza Minelli, James Gallway, BB King, Duane Eddy, and Thomas Wilkens, conducting.  It was great! BB King is wonderful! Did you know he doesn't play the guitar and sing at the same time..... listen next time you hear him.  James Gallway on a flute is awesome, and Liza is a true performer!  It was at least 90 degrees outside and hot and she sang and danced and gave a great performance.

The first time I went to the Bowl was in 1983 with tickets given to me.  It was Itzhak Perlman.  I didn't know who I was seeing or the significance of his great talent, but I had a great time.  I have purchased season tickets almost every year since.  I like to go on Jazz nights and/or the weekend spectaculars.  This year I got both series!

Saturday night was the Mariachi Festival, which is fun.  I got box seats for this one because it's fun to eat and drink and sit comfortably during this show as it is 4.5 hours long.  Each night ended with spectacular fireworks.
